3 Ways You Could Be Irritating Your Gums
May 2, 2023
Your gums are equally important as your teeth when it comes to your oral health. Certain factors can irritate the soft tissues, which can increase your risk of gum disease. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that 50% of adults have gum disease. With your oral and general health closely connected, healthy gums are essential for your overall wellness. Here are 3 simple mistakes that can irritate your gums.
1. Aggressive Brushing Habits
Your toothbrush is the most frequently used tool you have at home to keep your teeth and gums healthy. The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends brushing twice daily. Although you want your teeth to be clean, pushing too hard with your toothbrush can damage your gums over time. It can cause your gum line to receive, exposing your tooth roots.
The ADA recommends using a soft-bristled toothbrush to gently clean your teeth. If you have a habit of pushing too hard, consider an electric toothbrush with a pressure sensor.
2. Improper Flossing Techniques
Your toothbrush can’t reach everywhere in your mouth, which is why daily flossing is important. Brushing alone can leave up to 40% of your teeth surfaces uncleaned, allowing plaque and tartar to accumulate. Bacteria in the buildup can infect your gum tissues. Early signs of gum disease include red, swollen, and bleeding gums.
Improper flossing methods won’t adequately remove plaque, allowing bacteria to irritate the gums. Pushing too hard can also injure the soft tissue. If you struggle to use the right technique with traditional floss, a waterflosser can clean the most hard-to-reach areas using a gentle stream of water.
3. OTC Whitening Products
Hydrogen peroxide is used in many over-the-counter whitening products. Although it is safe when used according to the manufacturer’s guidelines, it can cause gum inflammation, especially if you have underlying dental problems, like an infection. Trays and strips aren’t custom fit to your mouth, which means they can also irritate or injure your gum line.
It’s best to skip the risks and visit your cosmetic dentist for professional teeth whitening. Your teeth can get up to 8 shades whiter, with results that can last for many months or years.
Changes to your gum health aren’t anything to ignore. Contact your dentist at the first sign of gum irritation. They’ll find the source of the inflammation to provide the treatment you need to keep your mouth and body healthy.
