It’s Complicated: 5 Common Complications of Poorly Fitting Dentures
May 1, 2024
When you have a piece of clothing that doesn’t fit right, you probably tend to stop wearing it, right? Maybe it’s too tight, or it’s itchy, or it just doesn’t look good on your body. Well, something similar can happen with your dentures. But unlike that old fuzzy sweater that has seen better days, your poorly fitting dentures can cause more than just discomfort. In fact, they can cause a lot of oral health problems you may not have even realized were possible. Here’s why it’s so important to make sure your dentures fit right – and what you can do if they don’t.
Gum Pain
One of the most noticeable complications of ill-fitting dentures is pain. This can be caused by your dentures rubbing against your gums, which in turn can cause chafing, blisters, and tenderness.
Trouble Speaking
When your dentures don’t fit properly, you may have trouble annunciating or speaking clearly, or avoid talking altogether. Don’t silence yourself over a bad fit! If your dentures don’t feel like they did at first, or if you simply haven’t been able to ensure proper speech, it’s time to visit your dentist for some adjustments!
Malnutrition
If you can’t chew a variety of healthy foods, you could be missing out on important vitamins and minerals that will help keep your body strong. This can eventually lead to malnutrition, which can cause everything from vitamin deficiency to unhealthy weight loss.
Embarrassment
If your dentures don’t fit, the pain and slurred speech that you may experience can be very embarrassing. This may lead you to isolate yourself from social situations, to suffer from low self-esteem, depression, or other mental health issues, and to reduce your quality of life.
Damage To Natural Teeth
If you do have any remaining natural teeth, improperly fitting dentures can even pose a risk to those teeth! That’s because your dentures can move, causing chips and cracks in your natural teeth. These chips and cracks can not only damage your natural teeth, but they can also leave you vulnerable to cavities and gum disease, as well as additional tooth loss!
If your dentures are uncomfortable or don’t fit the way they should, you don’t have to suffer in silence. Correcting improperly fitting dentures can eliminate pain, protect your oral health, and end any embarrassment you may be experiencing, giving you back your reason to smile!
